Milpitas High Honors Student Athletes

The annual Leo B. Murphy Athletic Awards recognized Milpitas High's finest, including seniors Mikhail Yanogacio and Kelly Forsyth, who took home the 'Leo' award.

Several hundred people gathered at the Milpitas High gym to honor a room full of stellar Trojan athletes at the Leo B. Murphy awards banquet on Wednesday night.

The night belonged to Milpitas’ top athlete , who took home several of the night's most coveted awards, including “The Leo,” which exemplifies the highest standards of achievement on the athletic field and the classroom.

While at Milpitas, Forsyth earned 12 varsity blocks along with recording a 4.0 GPA. She will also be a valedictorian at her graduation.

“I want to thank my coaches for getting me through the tough times,” Milpitas High senior Kelly Forsyth said. “I attended to my studies right after practices and also on the weekends.”

Forsyth also took home with her two sportsmanship awards for varsity cross country and varsity soccer. The coaches also voted her as the senior Female Athlete of the Year.

Forsyth will attend the Washington State University in the fall. She plans to hit the books and continue her love of sports at the club level.

On the boys side, “The Leo” went to , who participated in wrestling and track all four years.

“This award goes to my brothers. They all wanted to win this award and I brought it home for all of us,” Yanogacio said. “This is truly a great honor tonight.” 

Yanogacio will attend San Jose State University in the fall and participate with the track club.

The Ned McIver award, which goes to the athlete with the highest GPA in their entire school career, went to John Nguyen and Kelly Forsyth.

Boys soccer star netted plenty of goals during his Trojans career. He also snatched up the Jim Ferguson award on his way out.

The Jim Ferguson award, which goes to the athlete for outstanding achievement for the school year, went to Ceja, and .

The Bill Bebout awards went to Tim Macauly, , Jacqueline Lamb and Sydnie Turner for their hard work and dedication to excel in the field.

“Tonight was a night that we recognize a lot of special athletes this year,” Lamb said. “We gave out a few hundred awards tonight, which is kind of nice. Sportsmanship is so important, so that is why we recognize those student athletes.”
