South Bay Murder Suspect Arrested In Mexico

He was taken into custody in Tijuana.

TIJUANA, MEXICO - A San Jose man was arrested on Monday in Tijuana, Mexico, on suspicion of the murder of another San Jose man in 2016, according to police.

Joseph Duran, 25, was taken into custody by Mexican authorities with help from U.S. marshals in San Diego, police said. He has since been extradited back to the U.S.

According to Santa Clara County jail records, he is currently in Santa Clara County Jail without bail and will be arraigned today.

Duran is one of six people accused of being involved in the murder of Cesar Ponce Sanchez on Dec. 18, 2016. Officers responded that day around 11:50 p.m. to the Mobil gas station at 1465 S. Winchester Blvd. They found Sanchez suffering from one gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital where he died.

Another man was charged in January in connection with the crime: Guillermo Cervantes, 21, of San Jose. He was already in custody in connection to another murder and is in Santa Clara County Jail on no bail.

Four other San Jose residents were arrested on Dec. 13, 2017, in connection with Sanchez's murder: Angel SantaCruz, 24, Jose Alcantar, 21, and Alicia Vallejo, 40. SantaCruz and Alcantar were both arrested on suspicion of murder, while Vallejo was arrested on suspicion of being an accessory after the fact, police said.
