Student at Merryhill Elementary & Middle School in Milpitas Places in National Geography Competition
Avi Goel placed first in National Championship of the U.S. Geography Olympiad and second in U.S. Division of the International Geography Bee

Eighth grade student Avi Goel of Merryhill Elementary & Middle School in Milpitas recently placed first in the Junior Varsity National Championship of the United States Geography Olympiad. He also placed second in the Junior Varsity Division National Championship for the International Geography Bee (IGB), which qualifies him to compete in the IGB World Championship in Berlin, Germany, in July 2018. The national championship and international qualification competition took place in Arlington, Va., and are among several local, statewide and national geography competitions Avi has participated in throughout elementary and middle school.
The United States Geography Olympiad was founded in the summer of 2012 as a nationwide competition to test the geography skills of American students and to help foster geography education throughout the U.S. The International Geography Bee is a new worldwide geography quiz competition for primary and secondary students in five regions, including Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Canada, Europe and the U.S.
