Abandoned Horse Euthanized, OCSD Seeks Owner
The emaciated equine was discovered one week ago left in a ravine near the 57 freeway.

ORANGE COUNTY, CA — The horse found trapped in a north Orange County ravine wearing a red halter has died, Orange County Sheriff's Department reported Thursday. The aging horse was discovered one week ago in unincorporated north Orange County, apparently left to perish in a ravine near the 57 freeway and Tonner Canyon Road, OCSD spokeswoman Carrie Braun said.
Deputies, along with OC Animal Care, responded to reports of the neglected horse, and found the animal had suffered abuse, apparent laminitis and inflammation of the soft tissue of the foot, causing lameness, she said.
The horse was treated by an area veterinarian who, after several days of intensive care, determined that the animal was terminally suffering.

"Her injuries were too severe," Braun said.
Residents were outraged and saddened by the news, shared by the department over Facebook.

One reader was angered, questioning in comments why it was assumed owner of the animal was at fault, asking if perhaps the owner looked for the horse, or if the animal fell into the ravine.
Still, others were saddened that the horse did not survive.
"I am thankful that she was cared for with compassion in her final days," resident Lori DiCarlo told OCSD on Facebook.
"I hope her abuser is brought to justice, although the punishment won’t be enough."
OSCD investigators are asking anyone who can identify the horse to contact investigators at 714-647-7083.
