What is the mentor, coach or educator’s name?

Mrs. Heidi Smith

What is your relationship to them?

I’m a parent of a student.

How have they made an impact?

Mrs. Heidi Smith is a veteran educator at Oxford Preparatory Academy, a public charter elementary school located in Mission Viejo. She’s a teacher at the South Orange County campus. I am honored to nominate Mrs. Smith for recognition.

Mrs. Smith represents the very best of early childhood education. She is consistently kind, loving and deeply compassionate, creating a classroom environment where every child feels safe, valued and seen. Her passion for teaching is evident in every interaction, and she treats each student with unwavering respect and care.

What sets Mrs. Smith apart is her extraordinary patience and composure. Managing a classroom of 30 four- and five-year-olds — each with unique personalities and needs — is no small task, yet she approaches it with calm, steadiness and grace. She creates structure without rigidity and nurtures growth without pressure, allowing children to thrive at their own pace.

For many students, Mrs. Smith is their very first introduction to school. That responsibility carries immense weight, and she handles it with remarkable intention. She instills a genuine love of learning by encouraging curiosity, creativity and wonder. Her classroom is not just a place of instruction — it is a place of discovery.

What makes her impact especially meaningful is how she brings learning to life in ways that are both advanced and joyful for such young students. Through programs like Art Masters, she introduces four- and five-year-olds to the work of renowned artists, guiding them to explore creativity with confidence and pride. She thoughtfully integrates STEAM concepts, language development and music into daily learning — whether students are experimenting, expressing themselves through art, or playing instruments and singing together. These experiences go far beyond traditional instruction; they build confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Equally remarkable is the energy and presence she brings to her classroom every single day. Mrs. Smith greets her students with a sincere smile and a genuine enthusiasm for learning alongside them. She has a rare ability to meet children at their level — engaging with a sense of playfulness and wonder — while still providing the leadership, structure and guidance they need. Her students not only respect her, they truly adore her.

On a personal level, her impact on my child has been profound. Like many children entering school — especially during and following the uncertainty of the pandemic — my son was initially terrified to go. He cried a lot and felt anxious and unsure. Mrs. Smith immediately made him feel welcomed, accepted and part of a community. Her warmth and reassurance transformed his experience. In a remarkably short time, he went from feeling nervous to eagerly looking forward to school each day and not wanting to miss a minute of her class.

Beyond academics, Mrs. Smith teaches the foundational values that shape strong, empathetic individuals. She models and reinforces kindness, sharing, respect and inclusivity. She celebrates diversity and ensures every child feels proud of who they are. Her classroom fosters not only learning, but belonging.

Mrs. Smith’s influence extends far beyond a single school year. She lays the emotional and educational groundwork that her students will carry with them throughout their lives. Her dedication, heart and impact make her truly deserving of recognition. Thank you.

What are three words that best describe them?

Compassionate. Kind. Wise.

Thank you for all you do, Mrs. Heidi Smith!
