Bathgate Elementary Readers Shine

Ten primary students were awarded at Bathgate Elementary’s weekly flag ceremony for reading all summer long by Principal Shelly Kurtz. These students, incoming first through third graders, went above and beyond this summer by logging in to the online school endorsed program Raz-Kids where children are encouraged to read and take comprehension quizzes at their appropriate age level.

Incoming First Grader Vivian Zhao spent over 30 hours reading on Raz kids at home, reading 186 books and taking quizzes on 182 during her summer break. Raz kids is an online program where kids K-5 can go to read anytime, anywhere. This online program was adopted by Bathgate Elementary school last year when research pointed towards studies that this program was well suited to motivate students reading at their appropriate reading level – and allow teachers to monitor their reading work at home electronically.

Students are awarded online stars on the Raz Kids program – 50 stars for listening to a book, 50 stars for reading the book out loud and even recording the book if they would like to, and an additional 50 stars for answering a comprehension test correctly.

Zhao garnered 41,740 for her efforts this summer. Second place winner Aiden Rodriguez earned 24,940 for his 20+ hours of reading 148 books and third place winner Moneli Nazeri earned 17,260 points for the 103 books read over the summer.

All ten children that were honored at the school flag ceremony will be treated to a special lunch with Principal Shelly Kurtz for their summer reading excellence.
