MISSION VIEJO, CA — A big Mission Viejo project has garnered attention citywide, and at Tuesday's city council meeting, council members will consider whether or not to deny a zone change request necessary for the approval of the project.

The meeting comes after the Mission Viejo Planning and Transportation Commission recommended the council to deny ValueRock Realty's zoning change request for The Gardens, a proposed development project on the corner of La Paz and Marguerite, according to a previous Patch report.

Commissioners said the proposed change to Mission Viejo's zoning code "does not fit the overall character of the city," a news release from the city said.

The proposed project, if approved by the city, would demolish the existing 46,148 square-feet of building area at 27001 La Paz Road to make room for The Gardens, a project with five upper stories and 234 apartment units, over 600 parking spaces and 48,000 square-feet of retail, according to a city staff report.

The mixed-use project would have a maximum height of six stories and 74 feet.
