MISSION VIEJO, CA — Nothing could stop 14-year-old Lauren Kiani from swimming a mile — the final step for earning a prestigious Congressional Gold Certificate Award.

In fact, she spent the last 6 months training for the feat at the City’s Montanoso Recreation and Fitness Center since learning of the opportunity through her local scout troop and church.

“I am interested in developing myself through volunteerism, physical fitness and in setting and achieving personal goals,” said Kiani, who plans to study physics in college.

Last Thursday, the fruits of Kiani’s labor paid off when she reached her goal while being cheered on by City staff and other swimmers.

“It’s so wonderful Lauren worked with our own Carren Chaney, who tracked her progress and signed off when she reached the mile mark,” said Community Services Manager Lydie Gutfeld. “With immense dedication, volunteerism and spirit, Lauren serves as an inspiration to other youth.”
