City Of Mission Viejo's Partnerships Continue To Help The Hungry In The Region

The City continues to join forces with nonprofit organizations to make a difference in the lives of the less fortunate in the area. Over the past few years, City staff has partnered with Food Finders to rescue food leftover from City and private party banquets rather than tossing untouched, perfectly edible food in the trash. Food Finders connects donated perishable food to hundreds of nonprofit pantries and shelters throughout Southern California to help reduce hunger and food waste, simultaneously.

“Time is of the essence in this process, so when Food Finders was recently unable to find an agency for the perishable food we had from an event at the community center which could potentially feed 75 people, our staff rushed to secure a food donation recipient,” said the City’s Leslie McDonald. “We were elated when local nonprofit Stand up for Kids stepped in to not only pick up the food but also use the surplus to feed homeless and at-risk youth the same day.”

The successful interagency coordination is a wonderful example of how community partnerships and proactive work can immediately benefit people challenged with food insecurity in the region.
