Colonel Gregory G. Raths USMC was awarded the Defense Superior Superior Service Medal for Exceptional Meritorious Service for the Armed Services of the United States for his service at the White House.

Established in 1976, the DSSM is awarded by the Secretary of Defense to military officers who perform superior meritorious service while in a position of significant responsibility with the Secretary of Defense, The Joint Chiefs of Staff, special or outstanding command in a Defense Agency, or while assigned to a joint activity.

The Citation reads:

Colonel Gregory G. Raths, United States Marine Corps, distinguished himself by exceptionally superior service as Assistant Chief of Staff, White House Military Office, from July 1996 to February 1999. Colonel Raths displayed superior leadership and dedication while providing operational and personal management to 2,300 joint service military personal, and oversight of $106 million in direct support of the President of the United States. Working closely with White House Military Office unit commanders, senior White House staff and numerous government agencies, he implemented innovative programs, completed major financial reviews, and improved the operational effectiveness of an elite unit of professionals. From working highly sensitive projects with senior White House staff to traveling with the President, Colonel Raths made significant and lasting contributions, ensuring the Military Office will continue to carry out its mission of providing uninterrupted military support to the Commander in Chief. Colonel Raths reflected great credit upon himself, the United States Marine Corps, and the Department of Defense.
