Costumed Drama Students Collect Food for Needy Today

Volunteers aim to collect 10,000 pounds of goods for national charity drive Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat.

If trick-or-treaters visit your house a little early (today, for example), don't turn the hose on them.

They might be trying to help the needy.

The Mission Viejo High School Drama Program is holding its annual food drive this afternoon, from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and students will be going out in costume to collect the canned goods.

"Last year we collected over three tons of food," said Kathy Harris, high school theatre program director. "This year our goal is 10,000 pounds."

According to Harris, participants used flyers to tell residents in Mission Viejo neighborhoods that they would be coming by.

The volunteers, made up of local elementary and intermediate schools' drama students, have been collecting food at local supermarkets all month.

Donations will be accepted until Nov. 3 and can be taken to the Mission Viejo Library.

The event is part of Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat, a national food drive by the International Thespian Society, an honor society for theater students.
