Dana Hills High School- New Bathrooms for Teachers

Parent Lynn Conger Highlights Facility Issues That Remain For Students Returning to School In August

39 minutes 01 seconds Lynn Conger Parent Dana Hills High School and member of the Dolphin Force Foundation (parent led fundraising foundation).

Good News: There is an August 4th meeting planned with Mr. Forney, CUSD Executive Director of Facilities, to address facility needs which include the following:

H Vac/Air Conditioning:

  • All H Vac/Air Conditioning Unites must be working before school starts.

Note: Not mentioned by Parent Lynn Conger in her comments- is the concern that CUSD is starting school early this year (August). Air conditioning must be working at all schools because August can be extremely hot.

Restrooms:

  • There are not enough restrooms for students, and the ones that are present are not always working.
  • New Faculty restrooms were added to the portables over the summer. There are already faculty restrooms in the Science building will those be made into student restrooms?
  • Where can parents find out the required number of restrooms per students and how is that number affected when restrooms remain out of order and are not working?

Drinking Fountains:

  • Only one exterior drinking fountain had enough pressure to allow students to get a drink.

Rodent Control:

  • Rodent access holes in portables.

Dry Rot:

  • Lots of dry rot that needs to be fixed and maintained.

Exterior Seating:

There is not enough exterior seating for the number of students on campus. Students are forced to sit on the ground and on curbs next to dumpsters to eat lunch. We estimate that there is only enough seating for 25% of the students.

Authors Note:

During the economic downturn, the State allowed Districts to use Deferred Maintenance Funds for General Fund purposes. According to the District’s Facilities Master Plan developed in 2009 and updated in 2013, CUSD facilities need $822 million in repairs and maintenance. CUSD currently has $44.9 million for facilities. Unfortunately for CUSD students, CUSD chose to use deferred maintenance funds to maintain maximum employee compensation during the economic downturn. Facilities have not been adequately maintained since 2008. When that is combined with increasing numbers of students on campus, the District is faced with aging facilities that pose heath and safety risks for students. Parents should remind CUSD that despite the fact that LCAP Goal 5: was to develop a multi-year plan to enhance facilities that are clean safe, healthy, functional... money that could have been used for facilities in 2014-15 and going forward in 2015-16 is once again being used to provide across the board salary increases for all employees.
