DUI Suspect Flees Mission Viejo Crash Cop & Citizen Take Him Down
Debris from the crash lay across the intersection of Via Madrigal and Calle Acala after a dramatic collision by a suspected drunk driver.
MISSION VIEJO, CA —A Mission Viejo teen was recognized for his ability to help others, Friday. Orange County Sheriff's Department Mission Viejo Police Services invited him to the station in praise of his assistance to a person in need overnight.
Late Thursday, officers arrived at the scene of a dramatic crash on Via Madrigal and Calle Acala, MV Police Services said.
While emergency responders attended a wounded mother and her 11-year-old son, the suspected drunk driver fled the scene on foot.

OCSD Deputy Olivia Coco chased then caught up to the suspect on foot. Also injured, she had "difficulty controlling him because the blood on his arm made it slippery," an OCSD spokesperson said.
Michael (last name not shared), a witness to the incident, saw Coco was by herself.

He asked, “Can I help you?”
At the deputy's permission, Michael put down his phone and aided in tackling the suspect. She was able to handcuff the suspect without further incident, at that time.
The suspect was arrested and taken to jail, and both victims were transported to a local hospital for a complaint of pain.
Today, Mission Viejo residents praised Michael for his actions on Social Media.
"How many would take out a cell phone and start recording but this guy does the right thing and helps an officer in need," Andy Engel of Trabuco Canyon said. "Way to go Michael, you restore my faith in people."
"Thank you, Michael, for being an Outstanding Citizen and helping us! We are grateful to work in Mission Viejo with citizens like Michael who have our back!" they said.
