Entire Mission Viejo City Council May Head To The Ballot This November

A judge will soon decide whether or not two Mission Viejo City Council members will be up for election this year.

MISSION VIEJO, CA — Mission Viejo residents may get the chance to elect an entire city council at one time this November, Voice of OC reported.

A judge will decide during a court hearing June 28 whether or not two council members sitting on the dais will be up for election for the November 2022 election season.

Currently, Mission Viejo Mayor Wendy Bucknum, Mayor Pro Tem Ed Sachs and Council Member Greg Raths are all up for election.

Council members Trish Kelley and Brian Goodell were elected to two-year terms in 2020, however, it was determined that the two council members wouldn't be up for reelection until 2024 after the city council passed an ordinance this year, Voice of OC reported.

The court hearing comes after a Mission Viejo resident filed a lawsuit against the city earlier this year, stating that all city council members should be placed on the ballot for the upcoming election.

The lawsuit stems from the city's switch to district elections that occurred last July. The switch was voted in by city council members as a response to a voting rights lawsuit, Voice of OC reported.
