Kids Become Authors at Orange County Writing Camps!

Adventures in Writing, a summer writing camp for kids is coming to Orange County this summer for a fun & exciting 2-week summer camp!

Mission Viejo, California - Teachers have long said that summer is a wonderful time for students to “get to know” great authors. For kids in Mission Viejo, summer is now an opportunity to get to know what it’s like to be an author themselves.

Adventures in Writing Camp was founded by San Francisco based children’s authors Hans and Jen Hartvickson. The program was created to help kids fall in love with writing, and it does so using techniques that you won’t find in a typical classroom.

“When we founded the camp, we knew that we wanted to forge strong, emotional, connections between kids and writing. We have set up our curriculum to teach writing concepts in exciting ways that relate back to our camper’s lives. Throughout each day of camp, students are learning without it ‘feeling like learning.’” says Hans.

Jen agrees, and works with curriculum specialists, musicians and staff to create activities that bring out the author in campers.

“We have a team of musicians and songwriters who have turned our Common Core aligned lessons into sing and dance along songs; games borrowed from improvisational theater, help to develop brainstorming skills and story structure, while experienced, local teachers deliver writing curriculum and help campers publish eBooks on iPads.”

The camp maintains a student to staff ratio of 7:1 or less to ensure each camper’s writing development receives consistent personal attention. Campers move through the day in “troops” (other campers in their grade level), while making new friends and receiving instruction customized to their grade level. It’s all designed to give them a “leg up” in the coming year, and as the founders put it, create a generation of lifelong writers.

“We want kids to fall in love with writing in the same way we have. When you are given the right tools and a positive experience, all you need is your imagination and you can find adventure wherever you may be. Adventures in Writing Camp serves as the first step in a lifelong journey.”

Adventures in Writing Camp will be held at Newport Coast Elementary July 6-17 from 9 am - 3:30 PM (extended care available) and Tustin Memorial Academy June 22- July 2, and is offered to incoming 2nd-5th graders for the 2015-2016 school year.
