OC School Put On Lockdown After Man Threatened Family Member With Weapon, Deputies Say

MISSION VIEJO, CA — Students and staff at Carl Hankey K-8 School in Mission Viejo were put on a mandatory "shelter in place" Tuesday afternoon, after Orange County Sheriff's deputies responded to reports of a man threatening a family member with a gun near the school.

The police activity was reported near the 27000 block of El Retiro at around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the OCSD, when deputies arrived to the residence they safely evacuated everyone living at the home before attempting to find the suspect.

"As deputies approached the front door to contact the suspect, he opened the door and pointed a rifle at them before retreating into the residence," an OCSD spokesperson said.

The man's refusal to cooperate with deputies prompted authorities to deploy a K-9 to arrested him.

Shortly after apprehending the man, who was not identified by authorities, deputies found that the gun the suspect had was an air-rifle.

At 2 p.m., Orange County Sheriff's deputies reported that the school would continue to operate within normal school hours.

The police activity prompted authorities to close Felipe Road, and parents and guardians picking up children were asked to use Jardines to access the school.

According to authorities, the school was put on a "shelter-in-place" for precautionary measures and there was no direct threat to the school.
