Matside Week 3--The Crowd Goes Wild!
This is all you need to watch to be convinced of the excitement of our sport.
In previous weeks in our video series we have covered match scoring, and we have shown footage of one of college wrestling's most well-known come-from-behind victory upsets.
This week, after yesterday's video on match structure, we have some more exciting footage for you, this time from the Michigan State High School Dual Meet Championship.
Not only is wrestling an individual sport, but it is a team competition too. Teams can win a state title along with individuals. In Michigan and many other states, this happens via the "dual meet" format, which pits wrestlers from each team in 14 different weight classes against each other. Each wrestler who wins his match can gain team points, depending on the margin of victory.
A win of 1-7 points is worth three team points. A victory of 8-14 points is known as a "major decision" and is worth four team points. A victory of 15 or more is a "technical fall" and earns the team five points, while a pin or forfeit win is worth six team points.
In the clip shown, Detroit Catholic--in the white uniforms--is behind by four team points going into this match, which is the last match. The Detroit Catholic wrestler is losing his individual match by six points with about a minute remaining in the match. He needs to win by fifteen or pin for his team to win the state title. Suffice it to say, it is not looking good for Detroit Catholic.
You will have to watch the rest to find out what happens...this is an exciting sport, that is all we can say.
