Mayor Cathy encouraged the Mission Viejo students to embrace technology as they would embrace a new language. The Mayor pointed out that in a world surrounded by technology, the ability of the students to succeed in their chosen fields will be greatly influenced on understanding how technology
works.

Most of the intermediate students of Bathgate elementary have already tried some form of coding in school and will be assisting the younger students during computer science week with their big buddy-little buddy system.

The Hour of Code is organized by Code.org, a public 501c3 non-profit dedicated to expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color.

With the Hour of Code, computer science has been on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo! and Disney. Over 100 partners joined together to support this movement. Last year, every Apple Store in the world hosted an Hour of Code and even President Obama wrote his first line of code as part of the campaign.

The goal of the Hour of Code is not to teach anybody to become an expert computer scientist in one hour. One hour is only enough to learn that computer science is fun and creative, that it is accessible at all ages, for all students, regardless of background.

Students from a 4th – 3rd grade combo class from Bathgate wrote a skit for the flag ceremony to help encourage the entire student body to participate 100% in The Hour of Code, proving that computer science can be fun for everyone.
