Crash Sheers Hydrant In Ladera Ranch

A reported vehicle crash caused a fire hydrant to spout water in Ladera Ranch, Friday.

LADERA RANCH, CA — A geyser was spotted in Ladera Ranch Friday morning following a traffic collision in the area of O'Neill Drive and Dorrance Drive, Orange County Fire Authority posted. For unknown reasons, a white SUV collided with a light standard and a fire hydrant, causing bolts to sheer and pressurized water to spout into the air, OCFA Capt. Alan Wilkes told Patch.

No injuries were reported.

Witnesses noted that lanes were blocked as Orange County Sheriff's Department and Orange County Fire Authority firefighters arrived on scene to address the incident.

Though it does take some time for firefighters to find the proper valve for shutoff in an incident such as this, Wilkes said, the hollow bolts create a "path of least resistance" for the hydrant to sheer from its foundation, ensuring that pipes will not need to be replaced.

"Obviously there is water loss," he said. Either the city or the water district will replace the hydrant.
