MISSION VIEJO, CA — As temperatures continue to rise across the Golden State, prompting Gov. Gavin Newsom to issue a state of emergency and the National Weather Service to issue an excessive heat advisory through Tuesday, city officials have decided to open the city's cooling centers to residents.

Temperatures across Orange County are expected to hit the triple digits by Labor Day weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Mission Viejo residents will likely experience triple digit temperatures as high as 104 degrees on Saturday, with Sunday temperatures reaching as high as 107 degrees.

On Monday, temperatures will scale down but only slightly. Accuweather predicted a high of 104 degrees for Labor Day, with dry heat and sizzling sunshine likely.

On the Orange County coastline, residents can expect slightly cooler temperatures ranging from 87 to 94 degrees over the holiday weekend.

Health officials advise residents to stay indoors with air conditioning whenever possible, drink plenty of fluids and avoid hiking or other strenuous activity in extreme heat.

Children and pets should never be left in unattended vehicles for even one minute.
