Photos: Mission Viejo Teens Grow Their Own Food

Students of Mission Viejo Fusion Academy learn how to create natural items to eat.

students worked their new Laguna Beach garden Monday morning while learning vegetable growing fundamentals.

The school recently tried to get their own garden put in at their campus, but due to complications, student parent Kelly Simpson offered her backyard for the home of the new school garden.

"I told Stacey (Anderson, Fusion teacher) that this may sound crazy, but how will you like to use my backyard?" Simpson said.

Now Anderson and her summer class are finishing the garden themselves.

"We had to load my friend's truck with dirt and he started freaking out," Conor said. "It was hilarious!"

The class is a combination cooking/gardening lesson, Anderson said.

"The goal is to incorporate the garden and cooking into the core classes," she said. "One day the students may be learning geometry out here."
