Schools Shelter In Place During Mission Viejo Police Search

Two schools sheltered in place Thursday morning after the Orange County Sheriff's Department reported seeking a missing parolee.

MISSION VIEJO, CA —Two Mission Viejo schools sheltered in place Thursday morning while Orange County Sheriff's Deputies sought an "at large suspect," according to OCSD spokeswoman Carrie Braun.

Deputies were on the hunt for an escaped parolee in the vicinity of Trabuco Road and Los Alisos Boulevard, leading to the shelter in place order, Braun told Patch. Student Resource Officers were present at both Glen Yermo and Del Lago Elementary schools during the police activity.

Shortly before 9 a.m., Mission Viejo police services deputies from the South Homeless Outreach Team were on foot patrol in the Wilderness Glen, between Lake Forest and Mission Viejo.

"They spotted the suspect, a wanted parolee with a history of violent crimes, who then fled from them on a mountain bike," Mission Viejo Police Services Lt. Quyen Vuong said. The shelter in place order was given to keep schools safe, though classwork continued to be conducted behind locked doors.

"Although (sheltering in place) could be stressful for the students, it is also the least disruptive. It is not the same as a Lock-down, which requires students to turn off lights, hide and possibly barricade doors," Vuong explained.

That individual was located and arrested as of 10 a.m., and the brief shelter in place order was lifted.

The parolee's name has not yet been released as of this report.
