Semi Crash Stalls Traffic On Sand Canyon And 5 Freeway

Semi truck vs. SUV collision stalled Thursday afternoon traffic on the Santa Ana Freeway. Orange County Fire Authority freed one victim.

IRVINE, CA — Mission Viejo and south OC drivers suffered traffic nightmare after a dramatic collision that stalled the 5 freeway on Thursday. A big rig slammed into a stalled SUV on the Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Irvine, injuring one person in the crash. That individual was freed from the wreckage but not before half-a-dozen traffic lanes were closed to traffic, authorities said.

The crash was reported just after 2 p.m. on the northbound side of the freeway, just south of Sand Canyon Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol incident reports.

The unidentified patient, who suffered moderate trauma, was freed by just after 2:30 p.m. and taken to a hospital, said Capt. Larry Kurtz of the Orange County Fire Authority.

Six northbound lanes of the freeway were blocked at Sand Canyon Avenue following the crash, according to the CHP.
