Today is a day to create awareness about cancer and to educate people on how to fight cancer through early detection and screening.
For the fourth year the Empire State building will be lit blue and orange, the colors of The Union for International Cancer Control which organizes World Cancer Day. According to UICC avoiding tobacco, eating healthy and exercising can prevent a third of the most common cancers.
One way to join the fight against cancer in your community is to take part in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Mission Viejo. Relay is a unique, 24-hour, event celebrating cancer survivors and honoring those who have lost their lives. It takes place at Saddleback College, 28000 Marguerite Pkwy, MV, 92691 on June 7 from 9 am to June 8, 2014 at 9am.

This year marks our 20th anniversary. Our goal for 2014 is to have 50 teams on the track. Currently, we have 23 teams. How can you get involved? On Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014 at 6 pm at the Norman P. Murray Community Center there is a Team Workshop.
At the workshop they can assist you and give you directions in forming a team or joining a team. It only takes five or more people to form your own team. Be clever and you create your own team name.

Because Relay is a team event, individuals aren’t required to be there the entire time, but it’s so much fun you will get caught up in the party atmosphere and want to stay. The day is packed with entertainment- music, Kids zone, onsite fundraisers, fight back messages, etc.
You don’t need to be a runner. The common thread is to have team members’ continuously walking, running or rolling around the track for 24 hours to celebrate those who have survived cancer, remember those we have lost to the disease and to empower everyone to fight back against cancer.
Relay is a healing experience for those fighting cancer. It offers them a chance to meet others who have claimed victory over cancer. This is a great, free family event for the community, but it wouldn’t be possible without the teams.
