MONROVIA, CA — Construction on an expanded Story Room at the Monrovia Public Library is scheduled to begin Monday, Oct. 26, with the library remaining open during the project, city officials announced Friday.
The project will expand the Story Room from about 700 square feet to roughly 2,000 square feet to accommodate growing demand for children's programming. In 2025, the library offered 368 programs for children ages 0 to 11, serving nearly 27,000 participants, according to the city.
The renovated space will include mobile shelving to allow the room to be rearranged for different programs, along with new window tinting to help maintain a comfortable environment. Construction is expected to be completed in December.
The library will remain open during construction, but visitors may hear noise during regular operating hours. Crews are scheduled to work from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and protective barriers will be installed around work areas to minimize disruptions, the city said.
At least 10 parking spaces and the adjacent sidewalk along West Lime Avenue will be closed beginning Oct. 26 and remain unavailable throughout construction.
The children's area, including the Children's Desk, Story Room, nearby juvenile collection and Big Cozy spaces, will be closed as an active construction zone until the project is completed. Some library collections have been relocated to temporary locations within the building.
Storytime and other programs normally held in the Story Room will move to the Community Room or Community Center during construction.
Visitors can check the library's calendar or call 626-256-8274 to confirm program locations before arriving.
