Armed Suspect Wounded By Police In SGV Carjacking Investigation

POMONA, CA -- An armed man was wounded by officer gunfire Thursday while Pomona police were investigating a carjacking.
The shooting occurred around 12:50 a.m. near the intersection of Rio Rancho Road and Auto Center Drive, according to the Pomona Police Department.
The carjacking suspect was wounded in the upper body and was hospitalized in fair condition, according to the sheriff's department, which is assisting Pomona police in the investigation. His name was not immediately released.

Pomona officers went to the area of Rio Rancho Road just of Rancho Camino Road on a report of a carjacking about 12:30 a.m.
"When officers arrived, they encountered four victims of the carjacking," a sheriff's statement said. "The victims explained (that) while traveling in their vehicle, the suspect stepped out onto the street in front of the vehicle and pointed a handgun in an attempt to make them stop."

The driver stopped, and he and his passengers got out and ran away.
The suspect entered the victim's vehicle through the driver's side and tried to drive off, but "was unsuccessful," so he abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot, according to the sheriff's department.
While Pomona officers were searching the area for the suspect, they received a call regarding a man with a gun who matched the description of the carjacking suspect.
"They responded to the location, found a man armed with a handgun, and an officer-involved shooting occurred," the statement said.
No officers were injured. A handgun was recovered at the scene.
