Blog: Pottery Studio Headed Into the Mud?
Pottery Studio May be going to the Mud. Monrovia Adult Ceramics Studio may be closing it's doors due to education budget cuts - ending a arts tradition that has served the community since 1950.
Since 1950, ceramic and pottery enthusiasts have been gathering together at the Monrovia Community Adult school to craft whimisical clay animals and Father's and Mother's Day mugs to impossibly elegant vases and extraordinary teapots. In it's history, there have only been four teachers. The last instructor was Rose Nishio a reknown local potter. Fittingly now in her place, her student John Riccio has taken the reins. However, due to the recent budget cuts, this studio may be closing it's doors forever.
Classes are stuggling to keep the enrollment growing due to the economy and the lack of funds for marketing - despite the school being the best value for Ceramics Studio in the San Gabriel Valley.
The student body hasn't changed much since 1950. The class ranges from 18 - 94 years young with experts who throw a pot with effortless ease to many who are still working up from a mud pie. Although ashtrays have now been replaced by tea bowls, you will still see potters enjoy the camaraderie of clay, discuss creative concepts and pottery tips over tea, group sales and pot lucks.

It is heartbreaking to see these enclaves for creativity vanish and we encourage anyone in the community who has ever wanted to make pottery to enroll for the Summer Session - as it is the best value in town (and a great Mother's Day gift).
Enrollment is $99 + $5 lab free for 10 classes over a 3 month semester. There is a one time purchase of $15 for tools and 25 lbs of clay (yes, that's right 25 lbs) can be had at a throw back price of $7/bag. Everything you make is dishwasher and microwave safe and the enrollment fee includes all firing, endless use of 30 glazes (ceramic paint). For those with more expertise under their belt - the studio also offers high fire, low fire, raku fire and sagger fire.
