Eighth Baby Safely Surrendered Under County Program, Supervisor Janice Hahn Says

LOS ANGELES, CA -- For the eighth time this year, a newborn baby was safely turned over to authorities under the Los Angeles County Safe Surrender Program, Supervisor Janice Hahn announced Wednesday.

The baby boy was surrendered Tuesday at a hospital in Pomona, according to Hahn's office.

The infant is the 150th to be surrendered since the county's Safe Surrender Program began in 2001, at the behest of Hahn's predecessor on the Board of Supervisor, Don Knabe.

"We must continue to raise awareness so that any mother in L.A. County who finds herself in a desperate and impossible situation knows that they can get their baby to safe hands in a way that is safe, secure and anonymous," Hahn said.

Under the county's Safe Surrender law, a parent or guardian is allowed to surrender an infant who is no more than three days old at a hospital or fire station without repercussions if the baby shows no sign of abuse.
