The officers saw a gun in the man's front pocket and attempted to seize it and take him into custody, but a struggle ensued, police said.

AZUSA, CA -- A man was arrested in Azusa early Monday after he allegedly pointed what turned out to be an air pistol at his estranged wife, police said.

Officers responded about 4:25 a.m. to an apartment complex in the 1200 block of North San Gabriel Avenue to investigate a report of a possible transient sleeping near a breezeway.

"Upon arrival, officers located Jorge Herrera, a 32-year-old Azusa resident, sleeping to the front of one of the apartments," according to an Azusa police statement.

The officers eventually disarmed Herrera and took him into custody, then found the weapon was an Airsoft gun, the same one he allegedly pointed at his wife, police said.

Herrera was arrested and booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence, violation of a domestic violence order, brandishing a replica firearm and drug possession.

Herrera was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail and was due to be arraigned on Wednesday, police said.
