Missing Bicyclist in Angeles National Forest Found Safe

A bicycle rider who became separated from his cousin in the Angeles National Forest was found safe by sheriff's deputies, eight hours after he was reported missing, a sergeant said Monday.

The man and bicycle were found on the Rincon Redbox Trail and reunited with family at Highway 39 and East Fork Road, said Sgt. Louis an Serrano of the San Dimas Sheriff's Station.

"He was last seen by his cousin at 3:30 p.m." Sunday, said Serrano. "I don't know what happened with him and his partner. It is a challenging trail."

The sheriff's department was contacted at about 8 p.m., he said. Search and rescue teams from the San Dimas sheriff's station, Montrose and Sierra Madre were all activated and began a sector search at 9:45 p.m.

The man was located on the trail at 11:35 p.m., Serrano said.

Bikers and hikers can't count on cellphone service on trails in those hills, he said. People can think they are in good shape but become tired on challenging hills and some in their group may want to go ahead.

"Don't lose eyesight of each other," Serrano warned.
