Monrovia Defeats Temple City, 54-0

The Monrovia Wildcats had the unusual task this week of trying to bounce back from a defeat, suffered at the hands of St Francis last week.  And bounce back the Wildcats did, in a BIG way, opening Rio Hondo league play with a 54-0 defeat of the Temple City Rams on Friday night.  Per head coach Ryan Maddox the ‘Cats focus throughout the week was simply “on the need to get better.”

Monrovia was playing shorthanded with 7 starters missing on defense, largely due to injury and a couple due to off the field trouble.  Despite the absent players the defense stood on its head throughout the game, pitching a shutout and limiting the over-matched double-wing Ram offense to less than 100 yards on the night.  According to Maddox, “the defense did well.  It’s just about continuing to get better each week.”

The defensive standouts on the night were cornerbacks Andrew Chhor and Jordan Nathan, who each recorded interceptions.  In addition to their performance, senior Logan Craig played well in the absence of linebacker Jacob Ramos.

On the offensive side of the ball, Monrovia was again without quarterback Deshawn Potts, leaving freshman Miles Bryant and sophomore Asaph Zamora to share the snaps.  Both quarterbacks faired well, delivering touchdown passes on bubble screens to Crayvon Gillespie.

Ultimately though the offense was carried on the broad shoulders of running back Kurt Scoby.  Scoby celebrated a new scholarship offer earlier in the day, this one from Boise State, by racking up over 200 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Scoby was quick to point out though that the effort wasn’t exclusively due to him, “I couldn’t do it without my lineman, coaches and people here supporting me.”  A remarkable effort by a very talented young man.

Monrovia hosts South Pasadena next week, looking to improve to 2-0 in league play.
