The Rio Hondo and San Gabriel Watershed Restoration Project is managed by the Cities of Arcadia, Bradbury, Duarte, Monrovia, and Sierra Madre, along with partnership from the County of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Flood Control District. The authorization was made possible due to the leadership of Congresswoman Grace Napolitano (CA-32), Congresswoman Judy Chu (CA-27), Senator Dianne Feinstein (CA), and Vice President Kamala Harris in the bi-annual bill that authorizes Army Corps projects, which was added to the funding and coronavirus relief bills that were signed into law on December 27.
“On behalf of the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel Water Quality Group, we would like to thank Congresswoman Grace Napolitano, Congresswoman Judy Chu, Senator Dianne Feinstein, and Vice President Kamala Harris for their stewardship on these projects and for water resources in our region and nation,” said Gloria Crudgington, Monrovia Mayor Pro Tem. “With this key authorization by Congress, we look forward to funding and completing these projects that will benefit our communities and the environment.”

The Rio Hondo and San Gabriel Watershed projects will capture, retain, and treat stormwater, restore lakes and wetlands, and recharge the area’s groundwater basin. Upon completion, the projects will provide ecosystem restoration, water conservation, and recreation for generations to come. The authorization allows the Rio Hondo and San Gabriel Watershed Restoration Project coalition to partner with the Army Corps of Engineers to further develop the projects.
