Monrovia/Duarte & Arcadia Girl Scouts hosted 3rd Annual Cookie Kickoff Rally

Monrovia/Duarte & Arcadia Girl Scouts hosted their 3rd Annual Cookie Kickoff Rally

What can a girl do? A world of good! I’ll show you how!

It’s Girl Scout cookie time again!

There was a Girl Scout Cookie Rally at Holy Angels Church on Saturday, January 10, 2015. The event was kicked-off with a flag salute and words of encouragement to over 600 girls from Mayor MaryAnn Lutz, Monrovia, and Mayor John Wuo, Arcadia.

Samoas cookies turned 40 this year and Daisy level scouts turned 30 years old and the girls sang Happy Birthday and celebrated with noise makers and dancing.

Girls attended “Cookie University” where they learned the five skills including goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics—aspects essential to leadership, success, and life.

In addition, there was plenty of support from local community organizations including Science, Technology, Enginering and Math (STEM), Wasewagan Camps, Foothill Unity Center, Wells Fargo Bank, Rockhounds (rock stone club) and the Stamp Club.

Many of the booths were led by older girls who inspired many of the participants by applying the skills they learned and displaying their projects. The Silver Trefoils and Heritage Committee were on hand to display badges and pins. They also shared Girl Scout traditions and taught the girls about the four World Centers.

The event was hosted by Joyce Santillan, Monrovia/Duarte Service Unit Manager and Judy Lee, Arcadia Service Unit Manager, with their tireless committee, Kryss Stephan, Gretchen Tagavilla and Jerry Delker. The group decided that bringing more girls together would provide an opportunity to “meet new friends and have fun with their sister scouts.” The event was also open to non-girl scouts too to inspire them to join.

Cookies go on sale from February 1-March 8, 2015. Many favorites are returning including Trefoils (shortbread), Savannah Smiles (lemon), Tagalongs (Peanut Butter & Chocolate), Do Si Dos (Peanut Butter Sandwich), Samoas (Chocolate, Carmel and Coconut) and Thin Mints (Chocolate and Mint). Girl Scouts are introducing two new cookies this year. One is “Rah Rah Raisin” which is an oatmeal cookie with raisins and greek yogurts chunks. The other is Toffee-tastic, a gluten free option, which is a crispy, buttery cookie with golden toffee bits.

Remember, when a girl scout is selling you a box of cookies, you are helping her to reach her goals.

For more information about cookies or if you are interested in joining Girl Scouts, please contact the local Arcadia Council at (626) 677-2000 or the Girl Scout website girlscoutsla.org.
