Alabama Mardi Gras Parade Crash Leaves 12 Students Injured

A car participating in the parade accelerated and struck members of a high school band from behind, officials say.

GULF SHORES, AL — A car participating in a Mardi Gras parade in Alabama drove into a high school band before the parade started, injuring 12 students, three of whom are in critical but stable condition, according to Gulf Shores city officials.

The city canceled the parade shortly after the accident. According to city officials, a 2008 Ford Expedition driven by a 73-year-old man accelerated and struck members of the Gulf Shores high school band from behind.

The driver is said to be cooperating with authorities and there is no indication that the incident involved alcohol or drugs. Officials also say it is not believed to be an intentional act.

Police have asked anyone who might have witnessed the crash and taken photos or videos to send them to bcowan@gulfshoresal.gov.

“My thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted by this tragic event at the Gulf Shores Mardi Gras parade. I have directed the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency to assist local law enforcement agencies with any resources they may need, and that coordination effort is currently underway," Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley said in a statement. "We will ensure all state resources needed to help with this investigation will be made available. Thank you to all First Responders and emergency personnel for your great efforts serving and helping our people in this difficult time. To the students, band members, families and community, please know I, and the people of this state, are praying for you.”

The car that drove into the students was representing the local chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, the organization said in a statement.

“We have been made aware of the incident and our staff is gathering facts at this time. We don't know the circumstances and we're unaware of the cause of the incident involving our Gulf Shores Chapter. We're concerned about those who have been injured and our hearts and prayers go out to them and their families as they deal with this unfortunate mishap,” MOAA said in a statement.

Alabama Highway 59 was closed due to the crash.

On Saturday, at least 28 people were injured in New Orleans when a suspected drunk driver plowed into the crowd during the city's Krewe of Endymion parade.
