Senior Nutrition Lunch Program Launches In Monrovia

Seniors will be able to enjoy a nutritious lunch after the club meetings taking place every Tuesday and Wednesday.

MONROVIA, CA – Monrovia seniors can now receive hot lunches twice a week thanks to the Senior Nutrition Lunch Program at the Monrovia Community Center in partnership with Serenity Care Health.

In conjunction with the Gad-A-Bouts and New Horizons Club, Seniors will enjoy a nutritious lunch after the club meetings taking place every Tuesday and Wednesday. Serenity Care Health was chosen as the meal provider due to their compliance to nutritional standards set by LA County, their licensed facilities and staff, and their cost-effectiveness, according to the City of Monrovia.

“The Senior Nutrition Lunch Program is a small way that we can serve the seniors in our community. We are providing our neighborhood seniors with a meal that is not only healthy and delicious, but also extremely affordable,” said Councilmember Larry Spicer. “At the end of the day, it was a beautiful day for the seniors!”

Serenity Care Health is well-known in the Monrovia community, as the company currently provides food for the Meals on Wheels Program offered by the Volunteer Center of the San Gabriel Valley and three meals a day for the residents at Henrietta’s Leven Oaks facility in Old Town Monrovia, the City said.

Many senior citizens do not have home-cooked meals because they live on their own, according to the City. Through this new program, seniors are able to have at least one home-cooked meal a week amongst their friends, while avoiding unhealthy options like pizza, fried chicken, or dollar menu items, the press release said.

“I am very excited about the new lunch program,” said New Horizons Club Treasurer Ann Kaplan. “The food was delicious, and getting to have real food is so much healthier than having fast food.”

Lunches are served from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., with a suggested donation of $2.00. All seniors over 60 are welcomed to join the lunch, but will be required to become a club member after two visits. Memberships are $5.00 for the year, the press release said.
