SGV Cities May Need To Identify Potential Homeless Shelter Sites
While homelessness was down countywide in 2018, it increased in the San Gabriel Valley almost 3%, according to the county homeless count.
MONROVIA, CA – All San Gabriel Valley cities may need to identify any sites that could be used as homeless shelters. Supervisors Hilda Solis and Kathryn Barger, whose districts cover a majority of the San Gabriel Valley, will bring forth a proposal to the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
If the motion is approved, it would direct county CEO Sachi Hamai to ask San Gabriel Valley cities to identify sites that could be used as homeless shelters. The motion would also direct county staff to identify county-owned and unincorporated areas that could be used for the same purpose, the news website said.
The only year-round homeless shelters currently in the area are Union Station Homeless Services in Pasadena and the Pomona Hope for Home Services Center, according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. While the 2018 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count found that homelessness was down across the county, the San Gabriel Valley increased close to 3 percent from the prior year.
