Carmel Jewish Food Festival returns July 27 for annual celebration

of food, culture and community at Congregation Beth Israel

New summer date announced for free, family-friendly event

CARMEL, Calif. (June 19, 2025) — A beloved annual community tradition returns this summer as the Carmel Jewish Food Festival welcomes visitors to Congregation Beth Israel on Sunday, July 27, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Now held earlier in the season, the event brings together the Monterey Peninsula community to enjoy traditional Jewish foods, festive music, cultural performances, and a welcoming atmosphere. Admission is free and open to all.

“This festival is our way of sharing Jewish culture through food, music, and connection,” said Lisa Averbuch, chair of the Jewish Food Festival Committee. “Everyone is welcome — whether you're coming for a bite to eat or to learn something new.”

Menu highlights

Prepared by volunteers, the food offerings reflect time-honored Jewish favorites, including:

  • Matzo ball soup
  • Hand-folded potato knishes
  • Latkes served with sour cream or applesauce
  • Corned beef and pastrami sandwiches
  • Sweet kugel
  • Assorted baked goods such as rugelach, challah, and hamantaschen

Proceeds from food sales support Congregation Beth Israel’s educational and outreach programs.

What to expect

In addition to traditional foods, the festival features:

  • Music: A mix of Jewish songs in English, Hebrew and Yiddish
  • Culture: Storytelling and cultural performances celebrating Jewish traditions
  • Activities: Family-friendly offerings, including a symbolic Jewish wedding reenactment and opportunities to explore the temple
  • Marketplace: A small selection of Jewish food products and handmade items available for purchase

“This event brings people together to share in Jewish culture and community,” said Congregation Beth Israel Rabbi Bruce Greenbaum. “It’s a day for connection, learning, and good food.”
