GLENDALE, CA — Glendale officials Wednesday encouraged residents to prepare for emergencies during National Preparedness Month as discussions continue about El Niño and the upcoming rainy season.
The city faces a range of natural hazards, including earthquakes, wildfires and extreme weather, according to officials. Residents were encouraged to review household emergency plans, maintain emergency supplies and prepare for possible power outages while considering the needs of children, older adults, pets, medications and anyone who may need additional assistance during an emergency.
City officials also urged residents to register for emergency alerts, know their evacuation zone and have more than one way to receive official information during an emergency.
Residents can sign up for the city's emergency alerts through its Everbridge system and find their evacuation zone through the city's Know Your Zone campaign. The campaign uses Genasys to help residents quickly determine whether their area is affected when evacuation warnings or orders are issued.
Throughout September, the city will share preparedness information and practical tips covering earthquake safety, wildfire and evacuation preparedness, extreme weather and power outages, and emergency water supplies.
Officials also reminded residents that emergency preparedness is a year-round effort.
"El Niño is a climate pattern, not a specific storm forecast for Glendale," according to the city.
Officials said the city will continue to follow information from the National Weather Service and share winter weather preparedness information as conditions and forecasts warrant.
