๐Ÿ“ฐ News we're reading

1. Moorpark won't mess with this 'American tradition' (thecamarilloacorn.com) โ€” Moorpark families can count on Haunted High Street staying put on Halloween night, after the City Council unanimously voted to keep the event on Oct. 31 despite higher weekend staffing and police overtime costs. City leaders said the downtown celebration, which draws 4,500 to 5,500 people with trunk-or-treating, carnival games, food vendors, and a costume contest, has become a core Moorpark tradition that also boosts High Street businesses.

2. Students 'Come Together' for college concerts (mpacorn.com) โ€” Moorpark College students are gearing up to headline two 'Come Together' concerts at the campus Performing Arts Center, giving local residents a chance to hear eight different student bands over two nights. With separate programs on October 23 and 24, the shows will feature studentโ€‘chosen rock, pop, and original music that showcase the college's growing Music Technology program.

3. Police volunteer recognized for 10,000 hours of service (mpacorn.com) โ€” A longtime Moorpark resident has been honored by the City Council for contributing more than 10,000 hours as a Volunteer in Policing, supporting everything from traffic control to home security checks. City leaders say his work with the Moorpark Police Department has boosted public safety and freed up deputies, while he credits the program's team spirit and close ties to the community.

4. Council rejects new fireworks penalties (simivalleyacorn.com) โ€” Moorpark officials are actively researching a hostโ€‘liability ordinance that could hold property owners responsible for illegal fireworks, even as neighboring Simi Valley has decided against new penalties. A draft ordinance for Moorpark, developed with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, is awaiting city attorney review and could reach the City Council this fall, potentially changing how local fireworks complaints are enforced.

5. A common thread (simivalleyacorn.com) โ€” Moorpark College is inviting students, staff, and community members to its new monthly Sustainable Sewing Hour, where beginners and experienced stitchers can learn mending and clothing repair while connecting with others on campus. The free one-hour meetups, including the next session on Oct. 3 at Fountain Hall, emphasize saving money, reducing waste, and slowing down with a hands-on, social hobby. A new Friday sewing club in nearby Simi Valley also offers instruction and shared practice time.
