Books at a Bargain

The Friends of the Library are selling books for $2 per bag.

The Friends of the Library is selling books at a bargain. The organization, which exists to provide support for the library, is offering bags of books for just $2.

Basically, the group gives a bag to patrons, who then get to select as many books from a large selection as will fit in the bag.

Books from most genres are available, including fiction for adults and children, self help books, cook books and business and travel books. On a recent visit, Patch saw wide ranging selections that included everything from illustrated children’s Spanish picture books to political humorist P.J. O’Rourke’s Parliament of Whores. As well, we found a few more canonical texts and the titles from the likes of John Grisham. For guilty pleasure reading, the Friends offer bags full of romance novels for $1 per bag. The romances are pre-bagged.

Librarian Heather Cousin said the sale, which began over the weekend, has been a big hit so far. It not only brings people to the library, she said, but many people even bring books to donate to the sale.

“It’s sort of self-supporting. It goes on and on,” she said.

Cousin went on to discuss the many things the Friends do for the library.

“They are responsible for the programs and the summer reading programs,” she said and added that the group even provides a Searchlight program, wherein patrons looking to purchase a particular book—down to specific editions—can put in a request and the Friends will search for it. More details about the program are available on the Friends’ website

The book sale continues through July 20. For more information, call the library at 805-517-6370.
