Memorial Day, officially a federal holiday since 1971, has unofficially been around since the end of the Civil War to honor our fallen service members. Did you know an official practice of a National Moment of Remembrance was established in 2000? Yes, at 3 pm local time, we are encouraged observe a minute of silence to reflect on the sacrifices of our service members who gave their lives for our country.
With COVID-19 prohibiting gatherings in Ventura County, our community’s traditional Memorial Day events are cancelled. Here in Moorpark, the American Legion actively supports our Veterans by putting on many events. This year those Memorial Day events will not take place. These include the annual BBQ at Poindexter Park, the public flag replacement ceremony at the Veterans Memorial, and the ceremony at the corner of LA Ave/Moorpark Ave.

Another annual event cancelled by COVID-19 is the Moorpark Morning Rotary Club’s Field of Valor. This annual event is a patriotic tribute to honor veterans as well as active duty military personnel and includes many flags, a color guard, guest speakers, live music, kids’ activities and picnics at Tierra Rejada Park. The proceeds from a flag sale go to support veterans and family of deployed military. . This year, although the event is cancelled, the Moorpark Morning Rotary Club will still put up a patriotic display at the park to recognize veterans and active duty military personnel.
We appreciate all these community groups’ efforts and look forward to honoring our Veterans with them next year. This year, we will all need to do our honoring on our own at 3 p.m.’s National Moment of Remembrance!
A big thanks to all the veterans in Moorpark and the country!
