City Staff to Check Into Porn Industry Condom Ordinance

Last month the city of Los Angeles passed an ordinance requiring actors in X-rated videos to use condoms. Following in its footsteps, the city of Simi Valley is considering a similar law. Now one of Moorpark’s city council members is interested in exploring alternatives for a similar law.

At last week’s council meeting, Councilmember Mark Van Dam asked city staff to monitor the situation, and look for alternatives and possible state regulations relating to the issue.

Though the original Los Angeles ordinance was aimed at making working conditions safer in the pornography industry, Van Dam indicated he believed a similar condom requirement would deter the industry from coming to Moorpark in the first place.

“What’s going to happen is . . . they’ll just keep going farther out and farther out and I’m sure we really don’t want the porn industry looking at Moorpark, with lots of vacant commercial space and industrial space, and picking us as the next spot, he said at the meeting.

The Ventura County Star reported that Simi Valley Mayor Bob Huber indicated that city’s ordinance is meant to do the same thing: “Its underlying purpose is to send a message to the adult -video industry in the neighboring San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles that it's not welcome in ‘family-centered’ Simi Valley,” the Star reported Huber as saying.
