City Council Selects Library Board

Moorpark City Council names five board members, including 19-year-old Abigail Sichmeller, who touts kids' perspective.

The City Council named five city residents as inaugural members of the Moorpark City Library board at its most recent meeting.

City Librarian Heather Cousin said she envisioned the board helping create a general focus for the library and perhaps guide some policies.

“I’ve worked with many boards before,” said Cousin. “They provide a direction for our services and they’re a great voice for the community, which I think is terrific.”

Cousin added that she hopes the board will want to be involved with planning events for the library’s 100th anniversary next year.

In addition to finding people with experience that could prove helpful in board members’ duties, some council members voiced the desire for a diverse board, to represent the whole city. That was one of the reasons members gave when suggesting Abigail Sichmeller for the board. At age 19, she was a bit younger than many of the applicants.

“I want to have a youth opinion in there. There are so many kids in the library, I think it would be cool to have them have a voice,” said Sichmeller, who said she applied for the board because she wanted to become more involved in the community.

“I wanted to branch out in a few different ways, and the library board is going to be one of them,” she said.

Along with Sichmeller, the other members of the board are Michael Fenerin, Cindy Housel, Karen Wrolson and Stephen Wolfson.
