Gallegly to Host Military Academy Meetings

Congressman to share information with young people interested in attending a military academy.

Rep. Elton Gallegly, who represents Moorpark, will host two meetings this month for students interested in attending the Military Academy at West Point, the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy or the Merchant Marine Academy.

The informational meetings are scheduled for: 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at Thousand Oaks High School, 2323 N. Moorpark Rd.; and 7 p.m. Sept. 27 at Camarillo High School, 4660 Mission Oaks Blvd., Camarillo. Both meetings will take place in the school cafeterias.

In addition to the congressman, representatives from each branch of the military will be present to share information and discuss the application process.

Successful applicants must be U.S. citizens, age 17 to 23, be unmarried, not pregnant and have no legal obligation for support of a child or other dependents. The congressman welcomes high school students to preview what will be expected should they wish to apply. Parents and siblings are also welcome to attend.

Each member of Congress may recommend a limited number of recruits for each academy. The nominees must reside in the member's congressional district. Gallegly will make 10 nominations for each vacancy and the academies will choose the most all-around qualified nominees for appointment.

Applicants are evaluated on academic qualifications, leadership ability and physical aptitude as well as on an interview with members of Gallegly's Academy Selection Board.
