Meet an “Amazing” Artist With Persistence And Passion
Wendell Dayton, at 80, is a shining example of one who never gave up his passion.

Wendell Dayton, at 80, is a shining example of one who never gave up his passion, and is now – finally – well rewarded. Just recently the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) acquired “Crescent,” Wendell’s 1968 creation. It's a metal sculpture of a moon and triangle positioned in such a way that a number of geometric shapes appear to converge into a single line depending on where you're viewing the sculpture. In addition, not long ago the Blum & Poe gallery devoted most of its space to a retrospective covering 6 decades of Wendell’s work.
For many years, Wendell, who earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Indiana University before moving to New York and then to California, supported himself by doing carpentry and construction work, along with the occasional stint as a security guard. He continued to explore his artistic expression whenever and wherever possible.
Wendell’s talent lies in what has now garnered him the art world’s attention: massive steel sculptures, often mobile, and usually created from discarded parts from machines, buildings, you name it.
