Sergeant Major John L. Canley at 80, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Honor, upgraded from the Navy Cross he received in 1970 for his heroic actions during the Vietnam war. This wasn’t an automatic upgrade. Marines who served under John, then a Marine Corps gunnery sergeant, spearheaded the 50-year campaign on John’s behalf for the Medal of Honor. They did so in gratitude and appreciation for how he bravely led his company during the brutal Battle of Hue, thus saving hundreds of people from yet more death and destruction.

Although retired, John still serves the Marine Corps whenever he can. For example in the above picture, John shakes the hand of a youngster who participated with him in a 2018 Marine Week physical training session in Charlotte, North Carolina.
