Meet An “Amazing” Who Appreciates The Fun In Carpentry Work
John McCurdy, 102, still finds it fun to build things.

John McCurdy, at 102, received the first ever plaque awarded by the International United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners for his 80 years of union membership. The Union never had a member of such long-standing. Previously, the longest “pin” was for 75 years. They created a new acknowledgment just for John. Who knows? Others may very well follow in his footsteps.
Before launching his civilian carpentry career, John joined the Seabees, and served in the 53rd Naval Construction Battalion during WWII. He was carpenter’s mate, first class by the time he left the service in 1946. Since his retirement, John has built various projects for his church, and made wooden cases for wall clocks and grandfather clocks to give away to folks.
Why has he been a woodworker for so long? John just finds it fun to build things. Now there’s a great secret to a long and happy life, no matter what you’re building.
