Meet An “Amazing" Who Is A Leader In Biotechnology

Akira was granted one of the highest prizes for scientists in Japan, The Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold and Silver Star.

Akira Iritani, at 90, is fulfilling a dream few people would ever conceive of, much less achieve. He and his team of researchers reactivated cells from a 28,000-year-old Woolly Mammoth, discovered in the deep freeze of Siberia. The cells were transplanted into highly specialized cells in mice and, lo and behold, the scientists were able to observe biological activity. It’s not enough yet to resurrect the Woolly Mammoth, but that is Akira’s dream, which he has held dear for decades. Finally it looks like there’s a path to getting there.

Among his many kudos, Akira was granted one of the highest prizes for scientists in Japan, The Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold and Silver Star, for his pioneering work in biotechnology.
