Memorial Day Weekend Crackdown Brings in 39 DUI Suspects

Various law enforcement agencies across the county brought in 39 DUI suspects compared to last year's 59.

With only a few hours left in the Memorial Day weekend, law-enforcement agencies in Ventura County have brought in 39 DUI suspects so far. No DUI-related deaths have been reported.

The Avoid the 14 crackdown began on Friday and ended at midnight Monday. Police arrested 59 people for the crime during last year’s entire crackdown, said Sgt. Randy Latimer of the Oxnard police, campaign coordinator.

Maximum freeway enforcement continued until midnight last night, according to CHP Lt. April Baxter, who commands the Moorpark squad. “Every available officer is on the road,” she said. The Moorpark and Ventura CHP squads brought in 28 of the arrests.

Two multi-jurisdictional sobriety checkpoints in Ventura brought in four DUI arrests on Friday night, said Ventura police Sgt. Ryan Weeks. Sheriff’s deputies and officers from Simi Valley, Oxnard and Port Hueneme staffed the enforcement event, which was moved from East Main St. to Harbor Blvd.

Officers wrote 34 traffic citations, 13 of them for driving without a proper license and two for driving on a suspended license. They towed six vehicles.

The California Office of Traffic Safety funds Avoid the 14 through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
