Moorpark College Football Team Plays in Bowl Game Saturday

Moorpark College notes: Here's what's going on with the Raiders.

The Moorpark College football team gets one more chance to finish the season on a positive note.

After back-to-back losses denied the Raiders the Central West Conference title and a chance for a berth in a playoff bowl game, Moorpark was invited to play in the Western State Bowl. The Raiders (6-4) face host Chaffey (6-4) today at 6 p.m.

Moorpark defeated Chaffey 24-21 during the regular season. The Raiders needed a late-game comeback for that victory and haven't won since. They are coming off a 46-14 loss to conference champion L.A. Harbor.

Moorpark's once high-powered offense has sputtered lately and could be further hindered without star receiver Chris Gant, who is questionable after having oral surgery.

Chaffey, meanwhile, won its last two games to finish in a second-place tie with Moorpark.

The bowl appearance will be Moorpark's 18th in 25 years.

Women's soccer: The Raiders are headed to the postseason for the ninth consecutive year. Tenth-seeded Moorpark (12-5-2) opens the CCCAA playoffs this afternoon at No. 7 Santa Barbara (15-3-2).

The Western State Conference rivals met twice during the regular season, with the Vaqueros winning one game 2-0, and the other tied 1-1. The winner this time advances to Tuesday's second round against the winner of the Ventura-San Diego Mesa matchup.

Moorpark is coming off a 3-0 victory at West L.A.

Cross country: The men's and women's teams both qualified for this morning's state championships at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Many of the top contenders will be familiar foes Moorpark raced against in the regionals two weeks ago. San Bernardino is aiming for a fifth consecutive men's title. On the women's side, Glendale is the defending champion, but Southwestern is the favorite this year after wining the Southern California championship with its top five runners being separated by just 26 seconds.

Women's volleyball: The postseason is almost here for the Raiders (14-7), who await Sunday's release of the playoff pairings to see who they'll face in Tuesday's opening round.

Moorpark clinched a share of its third consecutive WSC title by sweeping Cuesta in Tuesday's regular-season finale. Last week's loss to co-champion Santa Barbara denied the Raiders of the outright championship.

Women's basketball: The Raiders are off to hot start, improving to 3-0 with Wednesday's 78-54 victory at Bakersfield in which Sidney Dobner scored a team-high 17 points with eight assists and five steals.
Moorpark's next game is 6 p.m. Monday at home against Santa Monica.

Men's basketball: After a two-week layoff, the Raiders (0-1) try for their first win of the season today when they host Orange Coast at 5 p.m.
